The Digital Nautical Chart®
(DNC) is produced by the National Geospatial-Intelligence
Agency (NGA) and is an unclassified, vector-based
digital database containing significant maritime
features essential for safe marine navigation.
The nautical chart is one of the most fundamental
tools mariners use to plan voyages and navigate
ships using the shortest, safest and most economical
routes.
Since 1996, SDI has supported
the mission of NGA to produce and continuously
maintain its Hydrographic Foundation Data to
include digital products formatted to Vector
Product Format (VPF), primarily Digital Nautical
Chart data. Hydrographic Foundation Data supports
navigation safety, maritime planning operations,
intelligence activities and coastal analysis
on a worldwide basis.
SDI has performed services
for DNC data that includes Harbor, Approach,
Coastal and General charts. A streamlined production
system is implemented to attain maximum efficiencies
with DNC data collection:
- Vector Capture and Feature Attribution
- Hydrographic Sounding Check
- Notice to Mariners and List of Light Updates
- VPF Validation
- Quality Assurance/Quality Control
