Historically, damages by
natural and man-made disasters have greatly
impacted water, wastewater and stormwater utilities.
Deploying GIS in these situations has proven
to be a prerequisite for quick recovery by enabling
accurate knowledge of infrastructure composition
and location. It also allows quick determination
of recovery requirements.
There are four distinct phases
of disaster management: 1) mitigation, 2) preparedness,
3) response and 4) recovery. GIS deployment
mitigates the many negative aspects of disaster
in each phase by enabling the authorities to
organize, analyze, display and verify crucial
data.
SDI has developed a series
of stand-alone Decision Support Tools used to
assist decision-makers in each of the four phases
of disaster management:
SDImaps
is a suite of mapping software developed specifically
for utilities. It provides a high level of customization,
integration and analysis, giving the power of
GIS to users with all levels of experience.
FloodVis
is a visualization tool designed to quickly
and easily generate a visual representation
of a flood. It uses specific algorithms that
speed up the process compared to other hydrologic
software and extensions.
Hurricane Model
is a proven assessment tool used by the USACE
to assess possible deployment needs and commodities.
The model provides critical information that
decision makers must have to quickly and effectively
distribute recovery assistance.
